Unleashing the Creative Commons SRD with Versions for VTTs and Tools
TTRPG fans, get ready for a game-changer! In response to the recent OGL fiasco, Wizards of the Coast released the Systems Reference Document (SRD) version 5.1 under a Creative Commons license, making it possible for creators and developers to freely build on all the core rules required to play the game. But what exactly is the SRD, and why is this release so important?
The SRD is a collection of all the core rules, spells, classes, and creatures in the 5e system, and it serves as the foundation for creating new compatible content. The Open Gaming License allowed many uses of the previous SRD, however with the release of the SRD 5.1 under Creative Commons, Wizards of the Coast has allowed content creators virtually unlimited control to create their own unique gaming experiences, and for developers to build innovative tools and applications for the D&D community.
Enter Tabyltop, the virtual tabletop platform for roleplaying games. The team at Tabyltop recognized the potential to bake the SRD 5.1 into our platform. To do this, we needed to we set out to make the rules even more accessible. We took the original PDF and created HTML and plain text versions, designed specifically for use in virtual tabletop (VTT) systems and other tools.
But Tabyltop’s efforts don’t stop there. We’re also creating a JSON version of the SRD, which will contain all the critical information and statistics in a machine-readable form. This version will be especially useful for populating databases and training AI systems to create new tools and applications for the D&D community.
At Tabyltop, we believe that everyone should have the opportunity to play and create the games they love, and that’s why we’re releasing all of these conversions under the same creative commons license as the original SRD. With these new resources, the possibilities for TTRPG players and developers are truly endless.
So, whether you’re a seasoned D&D veteran or a newcomer to the world of roleplaying, we invite you to join us on this exciting journey. With the SRD 5.1 and Tabyltop’s efforts to make it more accessible, the world of D&D has never been more open to creativity and innovation. Let’s see what you can do with it!
